What can you ask?
- Advice on how to best showcase your contributions based on your unique background
- Clarification on an ongoing debate you have with a friend about topics such as how to write essays or the importance of AP scores
- The truth about rumors you’ve heard
- TIP from our experience interviewing countless admissions insiders: They like to share their opinions, experiences, and career takeaways. Ask them questions about them, not just yourself.
- Anything related to Carnegie Mellon or other extremely selective colleges: admissions, student life, career projections, athletics, etc.
What shouldn’t you ask? (and why?)
- Questions about easy-to-find facts like minimum qualifications and fields of study offered (we want to show that you’ve done your research)
- Questions about how much financial aid you’ll get (this can only be determined after a complete review of your family’s financial records by the financial aid office)
- Questions that disrespect the admission director’s decisions, privacy, or profession (we want to value his/her time and generosity)
- Questions that require a very lengthy backstory or attachments to understand (we want to respect the interview process)
